Project summary

This study, commissioned by the International Labour Organisation South Africa, aims to investigate the causes, nature and impact of child work and labour in agriculture (subsistence and commercial) to inform government policy. The study is being conducted in Mpumalanga (Tshongwe); Western Cape (Breede Valley) and KwaZulu Natal (Weenen / Msigna).

Children aged 12-16 years will complete a school-based questionnaire on their activities. Focus group discussions and interviews will also be conducted with adults (farmers, teachers, parents, social workers and traditional leaders) and children on their experience of working in agriculture.
